Gangs/Drug Lords

There is this idea that all Latino people are in gangs or their parents/siblings belong to gangs, especially if they live in a major city. This is not true, and it plays into harmful gender and sexuality stereotypes, such as a tendency toward violence and toxic masculinity. Boys are supposed to be interested in cars or motorcycles. Boys are supposed to be macho and want tattoos.

This is especially problematic when the stereotype intersects with Latino men or boys that belong to the LGBTQ community. These boys can be bullied and beaten until they start to perform the same toxic stereotypes.

In elementary school classrooms, young Latino boys should be allowed to express themselves the same way as any other boy or girl. In pre-K, boys should be able to pretend to be stay-at-home dads and play house. If they want to wear pink in third grade, they should feel confident with their choice. If they want to pick a sticker of a heart instead of a truck, that is their prerogative. Don’t let someone pick on them for their preferences.
